Get results in days, not monthsResults in days, not monthsA family law practice can waste a surprising amount of ad money on people who will never hire a lawyer: someone looking for a free form, a student writing a paper, a parent who wants a court clerk's phone number or a person in another state. It can also underspend on the searches that matter, because a campaign was built around one broad word instead of the matters the firm wants.
We build Google search campaigns for family law attorneys around the matters you want, the courts you serve and the hours a person will answer. Management is $895 a month for Google Ads alone or $1,595 with a second platform, with no contract and no setup fee. Ad spend is separate and goes straight to Google. Nothing here is a promise of calls or retained clients.
Structure
| Campaign | Typical ad groups | Landing page | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Custody and parenting time | First order, schedule change, relocation, holiday disputes, enforcement | A custody page for each situation, with a visible phone number | Highest-intent searches. Keep them separate from informational terms |
| Child and spousal support | Establishing support, modification, unpaid support, payer and recipient | Support pages written for both sides | Use clear intent words so job seekers and calculators do not trigger ads |
| Parentage | Paternity, establishing parentage, adding a name, testing questions | A parentage page with a gentle tone | Sensitive. Review copy carefully and avoid assumptions |
| Adoption | Stepparent, relative, private | One page per adoption type | Smaller volume and more research behavior. Test slowly |
| Guardianship | Minor guardianship, relatives raising a child | A page for relatives in a hurry | Often searched by people unfamiliar with legal vocabulary |
| Protective orders | Only where the firm handles them and can respond promptly | A safe, quiet page with emergency resources | Often better left out of paid ads. Discuss before running |
| Spanish-language | Mirror the English campaigns that already work | Native Spanish pages, not translations | Only when a Spanish speaker answers the phone |
Most firms begin with one or two of these rows. A new campaign is added only after the first has stable tracking and a clear picture of consultation quality.
Keywords
The strongest keywords in family law contain a matter and a signal that the person wants a professional: "custody lawyer", "child support attorney", "stepparent adoption lawyer", "guardianship attorney" and their local variants. Questions such as "how do I get custody" are a different type of search. They sometimes lead to calls, but they also draw people who are only researching. We usually start with the matter-and-lawyer terms, and add question-style terms later, with their own landing pages and a smaller budget.
Match types deserve respect. Broad matching can wander into "legal aid", "free custody forms" or "court date lookup" quickly. Phrase and exact matches give tighter control, and we monitor the search terms report closely. Wherever Google's automation is useful, we use it with firm limits and a regular review of what it is finding.
Spanish family law searches have their own vocabulary. People may type "abogado de custodia", "abogado de manutención de menores", "pensión alimenticia" or "abogado de familia cerca de mí". Regional preferences differ, so we ask your Spanish-speaking staff which words they hear on the phone before choosing.
Negative keywords
Words like free, form, template, pdf, download
These come from people who want to do it themselves. Some are good prospects for a limited-scope service, but they rarely want a full retainer.
Case search, docket, records, hearing date, clerk
People trying to find information about an existing case. A blanket negative keeps those clicks from billing.
Low-income help, pro bono, free attorney
Unless your firm offers such services, these searchers will be disappointed. Consider linking to legitimate resources on your website instead.
Jobs, salary, paralegal, how to become, school, internships
Common in legal searches and almost never a client.
Child support calculator, online divorce, write my own
A calculator page can be a useful content asset, but paying for those clicks is a different decision from advertising for clients.
Names of states and cities you do not serve
Prevents spending on someone who cannot use your services and keeps the geo setting honest.
Criminal, immigration, bankruptcy and other practice areas you do not take
Added to keep the campaign focused. Review often, because someone searching "custody and DUI" may need a referral.
Hours and calls
In family law, a large part of the value is the call. A parent who is told "we will get back to you" may dial the next number on the screen. We therefore align ad schedules with phone coverage. If an answering partner covers evenings, ads can run into the evening with copy that says so. If nobody answers after six, the account should either pause or change to a message that sets honest expectations, such as an online scheduling link.
Call assets and call-only formats can help people reach you in one tap, and call reporting from Google or a tracking number shows which searches led to calls. Each call should be tagged afterward as a consultation, a retained matter, a poor fit or a wrong number. That tag is more valuable than any click statistic, and it is how we decide where to put the next dollar.
Recording calls raises its own legal and ethical questions. Many states have specific rules about call recording, and callers who are discussing a family crisis expect privacy. Use call recording only after reviewing the rules in your state and telling callers clearly at the start of the call.
Setup and tracking
A tracking number on the landing page and a Google forwarding number in the ads let us see calls by campaign and keyword.
Contact form submissions and booking events are counted as separate conversions, with the sensitive text of the message never sent to an analytics tool.
Where you can share it, consultations booked and matters retained are added back to the account so bidding can learn from real results.
Each landing page is tested on a phone: speed, call button, form, safe exit control where relevant and a clear statement of what the matter covers.
Every week we read what people actually typed and add negatives for waste or new ad groups for useful phrases.
Geography
Family law matters are heard in a specific court, so the right target is rarely a simple circle around the office. A firm may handle matters in three counties and avoid a fourth. A parent who lives in a nearby town but works in the city where the court sits may search from one place and need a lawyer for another. We set targeting by the places you really appear in, not by what looks big, and we use location reports to check the people who see ads are the people you can serve.
Location and presence settings also matter. "People in" and "people searching about" a location produce different audiences. For most family law firms, serving people in and regularly in the area is the safe choice. Where a parent is moving across a state line, you may want to consider keyword and landing page wording that explains what your firm can and cannot do for an interstate situation, and send those searchers to an honest page.
Budget
We do not use industry averages, because they are borrowed from other markets and other fee models. Instead we start with your own figures: what you charge for a typical retained matter, how many consultations you can hold in a week, what share become clients and how long a matter lasts. If you do not have those numbers yet, we begin small and learn them together.
A modest daily limit on one well-built campaign tends to teach more than a large limit spread across a dozen. After several weeks we can see which searches produce consultations and which produce nothing, and adjust accordingly. If a campaign is not producing the right calls, we pause it and say so. We would rather end a campaign than defend it.
The investment
Quick answers
Our fee is $895 a month for Google Ads alone, $1,595 with a second platform and $2,295 with three. There is no setup fee and no contract. Ad spend is separate and is paid directly to Google. We help you choose a spend level based on your own numbers.
Because a family law practice is local to the courts it appears in. A statewide campaign pays for clicks from people you cannot serve. We target the counties and cities you really work in.
Yes, and your attorneys approve them. We avoid superlatives, promises and any wording your bar might dislike, and we keep the tone calm. You make the final call.
Only after you know your state's rules and have a clear notice at the start of the call. Many firms rely on call tracking and a manual note instead. Ask your ethics counsel if you are unsure.
Some firms do, and others avoid it. It requires a safe landing page, quick response and no pressure language. We discuss it case by case, and many firms choose to leave it out of paid search.
Ads can begin to receive clicks within days, but meaningful patterns take weeks of data, particularly when matters are sold by consultation rather than purchased online. We report regularly and make no promise about volume.
Then we shape the schedule or the message around that fact. An ad that offers online scheduling at night can work, and a campaign that rings into silence cannot.
